Most homeowners come to us knowing they want a wood privacy fence, but not knowing there's more than one way to build one. Board-on-board and shadowbox are the two styles we get asked to compare most, and the difference matters more than people expect once the fence is actually up.
Board-on-board overlaps pickets on alternating sides of the rails, so every gap on the front is covered by a board on the back. There's no line of sight through the fence from either side at any angle — it's fully private, both ways, all the time.
Shadowbox alternates boards front and back on the same rail line with a small gap between them, rather than overlapping. From directly in front, you get filtered glimpses through the gaps; from an angle, visibility drops off. It's semi-private rather than fully private.
| Category | Board-on-Board | Shadowbox |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | Full — no sightline through at any angle | Partial — filtered view straight-on, more private at an angle |
| Airflow | Lower — more solid surface | Higher — gaps let air move through |
| Look from both sides | Nearly identical, good "neighbor-friendly" look | Identical by design — boards alternate evenly |
| Material use | More boards per linear foot due to overlap | Fewer boards, gaps built into the spacing |
| Wind load | Higher — more solid surface catches more wind | Lower — gaps relieve wind pressure |
Board-on-board gets requested most when there's a real privacy need — a pool, a hot tub, a close neighbor. Shadowbox tends to win when someone wants the classic wood privacy fence look but still wants some breeze through the yard, or when the fence runs along a windier, more exposed side of the property.
Both styles use the same posts, rails, and framing — the difference is entirely in how the pickets are hung. If you're also deciding between wood and other materials first, see our wood vs vinyl comparison.
