How to Fix a Sagging Gate

By Ruth Fence and Deck · 2026-07-16 · Louisville, KY

A sagging gate is one of the most common repair calls we get, and it's also one of the most misdiagnosed by homeowners trying to fix it themselves. People replace hinges, add extra screws, even swap the whole gate — and it sags again within a season because the actual problem was never the gate at all.

Start With the Hinge Post, Not the Gate

Almost every sagging gate traces back to the hinge post, not the gate itself. If the post the hinges are mounted to has shifted, leaned, or was never set deep enough to begin with, no amount of hardware on the gate will fix it — you're bolting a straight gate to a post that's no longer straight.

How to Check

If the Post Is the Problem

There's no hardware fix for a failed post — it needs to be reset or replaced. See our post on repairing vs replacing a rotted post for how we make that call. Gate posts specifically should be sized up from standard line posts to begin with, since they carry more stress than any other post on the fence.

If the Post Is Solid, Check the Hardware

From Our Experience

We size gate posts larger than standard line posts and set them deeper on every gate we install, precisely because this is where we see the most repair calls on other companies' work. A gate post built right the first time rarely needs any of these fixes later.

When to Call a Pro

If the hinge post is leaning or the footing has failed, that's a post-replacement job, not a hardware fix. If it's just loose hardware or a slight sag, the fixes above are reasonable to try yourself first.
