What to Do After Storm Damage to Your Fence

By Ruth Fence and Deck · 2026-07-16 · Louisville, KY

Louisville storms don't mess around. Straight-line winds, derechos, and ice storms can take out an entire section of fence in minutes. We've been repairing storm-damaged fences across Louisville and Southern Indiana for over 15 years, and the calls always spike the same way: a big storm rolls through, and the next morning we're fielding calls from homeowners standing in front of a leaning or flattened fence line, not sure what to do first.

Here's the order we'd recommend, whether you call us or handle it yourself.

1. Check for Immediate Hazards

Before you touch anything, look for downed power lines near or on the fence, and don't approach if there's any chance a line is live. If a tree limb is resting on the fence in a way that looks unstable, keep kids and pets away until it's cleared.

2. Document Everything Before You Clean Up

Take photos and video of all the damage before you move debris or start repairs. This matters for two reasons: it's what your insurance company will ask for, and it's what any contractor needs to give you an accurate estimate. Get wide shots of the whole damaged section and close-ups of specific broken posts, rails, or panels.

From Our Experience

We can't count how many times a homeowner has cleared all the debris before we arrive, wanting to be helpful — and then their insurance adjuster asks for photos of the original damage that no longer exist. Document first, clean up second.

3. Know What Kind of Damage You're Dealing With

Wind Damage

High winds and derecho-style storms tend to snap posts at the base, blow out whole panels, or leave sections leaning at a dangerous angle. Sometimes only a few posts are affected even when a long run looks bad from a distance.

Ice Storm Damage

Ice accumulation adds serious weight to fence panels, which can crack rails, split boards, and cause posts to lean gradually rather than snap outright. We see a predictable surge of ice damage calls every late winter.

4. Call Your Insurance Company

Many homeowner's policies cover storm damage to fences, but coverage and deductibles vary by policy. Call and ask what they need from you — usually photos and a written repair estimate. Get a written estimate from a licensed contractor you can submit directly.

5. Get an Estimate Fast — Fence Damage Rarely Gets Better on Its Own

A leaning section left alone tends to get worse with the next round of wind or rain, and a downed fence is also a safety and security gap for pets and kids. We prioritize storm calls and typically schedule estimates within 1-3 days of a major storm event — after a big one, schedules fill up fast, so call as soon as it's safe to do so.

What Storm Repair Typically Costs in Louisville

Damage LevelTypical Cost
Minor (a few boards or one panel)$150–$400
Major (multiple sections or post replacement)$500–$2,000+

Most storm damage is repairable without replacing the whole fence — see our post on repairing versus replacing posts for how we make that call.
