Joist tape has become one of those details that shows up in every deck-building forum and YouTube video, usually presented as something no responsible builder would skip. We get asked about it more and more, and the honest answer is: for most decks, it's not doing the job people think it's doing.

Here's our take on why we don't consider it a must-have.

What Joist Tape Actually Is

Joist tape is a self-adhering strip — usually a butyl or acrylic-based membrane — applied to the top of a joist before decking goes down. The pitch is that it sheds water off the joist top and seals around the screws that fasten the deck boards.

Why It's Suddenly Everywhere

Joist tape's popularity took off largely alongside composite decking. Several composite manufacturers added it as a warranty requirement, which is a reasonable thing for them to do — it protects their liability on a product they don't control the installation of. That got translated in a lot of marketing and online discussion into "joist tape is essential for any deck," which is a bigger claim than the original warranty language actually supports.

Why We Don't Push It as Necessary

Modern pressure-treated lumber is built for exactly this exposure — today's treated lumber uses preservatives designed to resist rot at fastener penetrations and cut ends, which is the entire point of the treatment. A screw going into properly treated lumber isn't the vulnerability it's made out to be.
A correctly built deck already manages water at the surface — proper board spacing lets water drain through the gaps instead of pooling on the frame. If a deck is built and gapped correctly, standing water on the joist top isn't the constant problem the marketing implies.
It adds cost and labor for a problem well-built framing doesn't really have — taping every joist on a deck takes real time on a job with dozens of linear feet of framing, and that cost gets passed to the homeowner for a benefit that's marginal on a properly treated frame.
A warranty requirement isn't the same as a functional necessity — a composite manufacturer requiring tape to keep their warranty valid is about their paperwork and liability, not proof that untaped joists fail at meaningfully higher rates over a deck's practical lifespan.

From Our Experience

We've opened up plenty of older decks with no joist tape at all, built with properly treated lumber and correct drainage, and the joists were still solid. The decks that had real frame problems almost always traced back to something else — a leaking ledger connection, standing water from poor slope, or untreated wood used somewhere it shouldn't have been. Not a lack of tape on the joist tops.

What Actually Makes a Deck Frame Last

Proper ledger flashing — where the deck attaches to the house is the highest-risk spot for hidden water intrusion, by far
Correct board spacing and slope — water needs somewhere to go; gapping and a slight slope away from the house handle that
Quality treated lumber, used correctly — ground-contact rated lumber where it touches the ground, standard treated for the rest of the frame
Keeping debris out from between boards — leaves and dirt trapped between boards hold moisture against the frame far more than a bare joist top ever would

When We'll Still Use It

If a homeowner specifically wants it, or if a particular composite product's warranty requires it, we'll include joist tape without any pushback — it doesn't hurt anything. We just don't present it as the thing standing between a deck that lasts and one that doesn't, because in our experience it isn't.
