Fern Creek Decks We've Built
These are photos from our own Fern Creek job sites, not stock images and not projects from elsewhere in Louisville. More than half of everything we've photographed in Fern Creek is deck work, which makes it one of our busiest deck neighborhoods.
What Fern Creek Decks Tend to Look Like
Second-story height
The main floor sits a full story above the backyard, so the deck does too. We frame these on tall posts set on footings, with bracing sized for the height.
Two levels, stacked
On some Fern Creek homes we built both: an upper deck off the main floor and a lower deck closer to the yard, connected by stairs.
Treated pine, black balusters
Most Fern Creek decks in our photos are pressure-treated pine, usually with black metal balusters, a popular mix for big elevated decks because of cost per square foot.
Built year-round
You'll notice snow in some of these photos. Framing and decking go in through the winter, so you can have the deck ready when the weather turns.
Building a Deck on a Sloped Fern Creek Lot
Many Fern Creek backyards fall away behind the house, which changes the job more than people expect. The low end of the deck may sit ten feet or more off the ground, so posts get taller and footings matter more. Any walking surface more than 30 inches above grade needs guards, and under residential building code a single flight of stairs can't climb more than about 12 feet 7 inches without a landing. On the tallest decks, that's why you see stairs that turn partway down.
We work all of that out at the in-person visit: where the stairs should land, whether a second level makes more sense than one tall flight, and how much usable space you get underneath. If you want that space dry, ask about under-deck roofing.
Permits in Fern Creek
Fern Creek isn't its own city. It's part of Louisville Metro, so there's no separate city hall to deal with, and deck permits go through Louisville Metro. An attached deck generally needs a permit, and raised decks are inspected for footings, framing and guards. We confirm what your address needs before any digging starts.
Wood or Composite?
The Fern Creek decks above are all treated pine, but we build composite here too, and composite makes a lot of sense on a tall deck where re-staining means working off a ladder. See how the tiers compare in our composite decking grades guide, or check typical prices in our deck cost guide.
Fern Creek Deck Questions
Can you build a second-story deck in Fern Creek?
Yes. Most of the decks we have built in Fern Creek are second-story decks off the main floor of two-story homes, often on lots that slope down behind the house. We size the posts, footings and bracing for the height and run the stairs down to the yard.
Do I need a permit for a deck in Fern Creek KY?
Usually, yes. Fern Creek is not its own city; it is part of Louisville Metro, so deck permits go through Louisville Metro. A deck attached to the house generally needs one, and raised decks are inspected for footings, framing and guards. We confirm what your address needs before we start.
Can you add a deck to a brand-new home in Fern Creek?
Yes. We have built Fern Creek decks on homes so new the house wrap was still showing. New-construction homes often have a walk-out door on the main floor with no deck behind it, which is exactly where a second-story deck goes.
Why do elevated decks cost more than ground-level decks?
A second-story deck needs taller posts, deeper footings, bracing, guards on every open side and a long run of stairs. Those add material and labor that a low deck does not need. Our free written estimate breaks out the stairs and railing so you can see where the cost goes.
