Leaning Fence? It's Probably the Posts
A leaning or wobbly fence is almost always a post problem. The boards and rails may look fine, but if the posts are rotting at the ground line โ where moisture meets wood โ the whole fence becomes unstable. Ruth Fence and Deck replaces rotted and failing fence posts throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana, often saving customers from a full fence replacement.
Why Fence Posts Rot
Fence posts rot from the bottom up, at the point where the post enters the ground. This is where moisture is constant, oxygen is limited, and wood-decaying fungi thrive. Even pressure-treated posts will eventually rot โ typically after 15โ20 years in Louisville's soil. Signs your posts are failing:
- Fence leaning or pulling away from neighbors' fence
- Posts that wiggle or move when pushed
- Soft, spongy wood at the base of the post
- Dark discoloration or crumbling wood at ground level
- Fence sagging between posts
Our Post Replacement Process
Assess the Damage
We probe each post to determine how far the rot has spread. Sometimes only a few posts need replacing โ other times we find widespread rot along an entire fence line.
Remove the Old Post
We dig out or break up the old concrete footing and remove the rotted post completely. Leaving old concrete in the ground and sistering a new post alongside is a shortcut we don't take โ it doesn't last.
Set the New Post
New pressure-treated post set in fresh concrete, properly plumbed and braced until the concrete cures. We set posts deep enough to meet Louisville code requirements.
Reattach Rails and Boards
We reattach your existing rails and boards to the new post, or replace any that were damaged in the process.
If your fence boards and rails are in good shape but your posts are rotting, post replacement is almost always a better value than full fence replacement. We'll give you an honest assessment of what makes financial sense for your situation.
